Simon and Schuster, 1961. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). The first novel by the author of GOOD AS GOLD and CLOSING TIME, a high-spot of twentieth century American literature which originated the phrase "catch-22" for double-bind dilemmas. Basis for the film. Very Good+/Very Good. The boards have slight fading around the edges and the lower corners are rubbed. A short tape shadow to the front free end paper. The price-clipped dust jacket panels are bright and clean but there is some minor chipping at the head and foot of the jacket spine (which appears to have been repaired with tape at one point). Signed by Heller on the title page. Additionally, there is a note laid-in (not attached) from Heller on a small page with his name printed in the corner which reads as follows: "Dear Mr. Merry: I've signed it on the page most book collectors prefer. Take good care of it. People tell me first editions are worth more that $800 today, and $200 more with a good dust jacket. The ink has been flowing more and better than ever since I got the use of my hands back. J. H." Very Good / Very Good.
